Job Description:

Education Apprentices provide a unique opportunity for talented individuals with limited or no teaching experience to explore the field of education and to gain hands-on practice and the training necessary to become a successful full-time classroom teacher or sustainability educator. Apprentices will observe and learn from educators and teachers, co-teach, support with grading, and may facilitate individual or small group student instruction and STEM projects. The apprentice will complete a two-week orientation and training period before assuming the main responsibilities of the role. This apprenticeship is mostly in-person and requires commuting to schools, businesses, partner organizations, and community entities in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas.

SCHEDULE

Start Date: May 30th

Timing: up to 300 hours total. Spark-Y proposes a schedule of 10 hours per week for 20 weeks, flexible depending on candidate availability.

COMPENSATION

  • $250 stipend at the conclusion of training period + $15/hr wage activated after training 

  • Urban Agriculture Certification

  • Entrepreneurship Certification

  • Metro Transit Bus Pass (if requested)

ELIGIBILITY AND SKILLS

Apprentices must be 18-24 years old and have the ability and/or willingness to:

  • Apply themselves to the apprenticeship with commitment and diligence. 

  • Foster strong, welcoming, encouraging relationships with youth participants.

  • Participate in relevant training and development.

  • Plan and lead activities catered to a group of interns for 5 hours a day,up to 3 days a week, in collaboration with a Spark-Y Educator.

  • Have an interest in teaching/learning about STEM, sustainability, and entrepreneurial topics.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS

  • Mobile Innovation Lab: Work on a team to develop “sandbox-style” activities on the themes of weather, forces & motion, coding, and engineering. Kindergarten-8th graders will complete these activities on the Mobile Innovation Lab, a mobile classroom on a double-decker bus that provides learning experiences through hands-on STEM education and programming.

  • Summer and After-School Program Teaching: Lead icebreaker and educational activities using project-based curriculum. Activities are scheduled regularly throughout the summer or after-school for grades K-12.

  • STEM Event Planning and Execution: Participate in monthly events that create STEM awareness, increase exposure, and provide hands-on experiences for youth (K-8th grade) through the design and development of hands-on activities that support a STEM theme.
