The Board and staff of Spark-Y stand in unanimous solidarity toward a call of accountability and swift action for justice for George Floyd. We have been listening to and supporting our partners, the AACRT (African American Community Response Team) and other partners, in the Minneapolis community to ensure our youth have their voices heard and are able to exercise their first amendment rights in a peaceful and nonviolent way.
Due to the killing of George Floyd, and the state of emergency declared in Minneapolis, we are postponing the Virtual Victory Garden event scheduled for tomorrow. We are going to focus on being of service to our community during this difficult time. We will still be giving away 750 free kits to the Minneapolis community in partnership with AACRT and we will update everyone soon as to when this will happen.
This unconstitutional violation of human rights and violence happened less than six blocks away from Spark-Y's original headquarters and the community that made up our first home. Our heart is with the Floyd family, our students, youth, neighbors, friends, and businesses in South Minneapolis. No longer can we allow injustices to be swept under the rug or ignored because we may feel like we are not directly impacted or are afraid to speak out. Now is the time to unite, in Minneapolis and beyond, to take care of all of our brothers and sisters in a way that honors life, liberty, and justice for all. #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd
In solidarity,
Spark-Y Staff & Board
